Below is a list of the most commonly used terms in Development Finance.

 
  ACP Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific region countries. Does not include North African countries or Republic of South Africa.
  Bilateral A relationship or connection between two parties.
  Cotonou Capital of Benin. Also the name of the ACP-EU agreement signed in Cotonou in June 2000.
  Debt finance Loan finance.
  DFI Development Finance Institution.
  EDF European Development Fund.
  Equity participation Finance by buying company shares.
  FDI Foreign Direct Investment.
  Guarantees A type of insurance to mitigate investment risk.
  GDP Gross Domestic Product.
  IFI International Finance Institution.
  MFI Micro Finance Institution.
  Micro-loans loans for small amounts of money, typically between $100 to $20,000.
  Multilateral A relationship or connection between three or more parties.
  Quasi-equity Financial products which combine equity and debt features.
